SUMMARY:Lagos Fanti Carnival\, An Afro-Brazilian Street Experience
DESCRIPTION:Africa’s biggest Afro-Brazilian street experience.\nApril 6\, 2026 📍Tafawa Balewa Square\nRegister to attend!\n\nThe Lagos Fanti Carnival is rooted in one of the Atlantic world’s most remarkable migrations. From the 1830s onward\, formerly enslaved Africans — many of Yoruba descent — began returning to West Africa from Brazil\, Cuba\, and the wider Americas. They came back transformed: shaped by decades of forced displacement\, yet carrying with them languages\, trades\, faith practices\, and street traditions they had refused to surrender.\n\n\nSETTLING LAGOS ISLAND \nThese returnees\, known in Lagos as the Aguda\, made their home on Lagos Island in neighbourhoods like Popo Aguda\, Olowogbowo\, Lafiaji\, and Brazilian Campos. By the 1880s\, they represented nearly a tenth of Lagos’s population. Their fingerprints are still visible in the city: in the Portuguese-inflected architecture along certain streets\, in dishes like frejon and acara\, and in the Catholic feast-day customs that became woven into community life. \n\n\nTHE BIRTH OF THE CARNIVAL \nThe Fanti Carnival emerged from this cultural fusion. The name is believed to stem from fantasia\, the Portuguese word for costume or imaginative dress\, while the tradition itself descends from the careta\, an Afro-Catholic form of masked street performance that the Aguda had known in Brazil. As they rebuilt their lives on Lagos Island\, these customs merged with Yoruba music and spirituality to create something new: a celebration that was neither wholly Brazilian nor wholly Yoruba\, but entirely its own.\n\n\n\n\n\nA TRADITION THAT ENDURES \nThe Fanti Carnival has been sustained by seven historic community associations rooted in the original Aguda settlements: Isale-Eko Woro\, Olowogbowo\, Okoo-Faji\, Lafiaji\, Okepopo\, Epetedo United Youth Movement\, and Brazilian Campos Carreta. Each brings its own colours\, choreography\, and neighbourhood identity to the procession. The carnival grew through the 20th century\, fell dormant for a period\, and has since been powerfully revived by these same intergenerational communities who kept the tradition alive in the first place. \n\n\n\n\nWHY IT MATTERS \nThe Lagos Fanti Carnival is one of Nigeria’s most layered cultural events — a celebration that is simultaneously a historical record\, a community gathering\, a creative platform\, and a statement of belonging. It connects Lagos Island to the broader story of the African diaspora\, to Brazil\, to the Atlantic world\, and to the enduring resilience of communities who carried their culture across oceans and kept it alive. To attend the Fanti Carnival is to witness history that has never stopped moving. \n\nDetails by @lagosfanticarnival. \n*** \nDisclaimer: Unless explicitly stated\, ArtGuideAfrica does not own\, endorse and is not affiliated with any event/organisation included on this event calendar. SUMMARY:Chapter Two: FESTAC '77 Beyond Nostalgia [A Salon Conversation]
DESCRIPTION:Nahous and Carté Lagos present Chapter Two of the Carté Salon series.\nThis salon returns to FESTAC ’77\, one of the most ambitious cultural gatherings in African history. While the first chapter examined the ideological background and ambitions that shaped the festival\, this conversation turns to what followed.\nTogether we will consider the aftermath of FESTAC ’77: the structures that carried it\, the institutions it was expected to sustain\, and the question of what remained once the moment of spectacle had passed.\nThrough archival material\, film excerpts\, and guided discussion\, the salon invites participants to reflect on cultural ambition\, memory\, and continuity in Nigeria.\nThe conversation takes place at the Old Federal Palace at Nahous.\n\nTickets [here]. \nDetails by @carte.lagos and @thenahous. \n*** \nDisclaimer: Unless explicitly stated\, ArtGuideAfrica does not own\, endorse and is not affiliated with any event/organisation included on this event calendar. SUMMARY:iREP Documentary Film Festival 2026\, 15th Edition
DESCRIPTION:The iREPRESENT International Documentary Film Festival (iREP) has announced a strategic partnership with Ecobank Nigeria for its 15th anniversary edition\, scheduled to hold March 18–22\, 2026\, at the Ecobank PanAfrican Centre\, Ozumba Mbadiwe Street\, Victoria Island\, Lagos. \nThe 2026 festival marks 15 years since the founding of iREP\, acclaimed as one of Africa’s most influential platforms for documentary films. Convened by the Foundation for the Promotion of Documentary Films in Africa (FPDFA)\, iREP has consistently advanced documentary storytelling\, critical discourse\, and capacity development across the continent. \nWith the theme “Transformation\,” the anniversary edition will examine the transformative power of documentary filmmaking in Africa over the past 15 years. The various events in the programme – conversations\, screenings\, workshops\, trainings etc – will spotlight the role of documentary films in shaping public discourse\, influencing policy\, preserving cultural memory\, and amplifying African voices on global platforms. \nSet against a reawakened African cultural renaissance\, the festival reflects a renewed emphasis on African creativity\, identity\, and talent. Through documentary cinema\, iREP continues to place African storytellers at the centre of conversations shaping the continent’s past\, present\, and future. \n  \nDetails by @irepfilmfestival. \n*** \nDisclaimer: Unless explicitly stated\, ArtGuideAfrica does not own\, endorse and is not affiliated with any event/organisation included on this event calendar. SUMMARY:“J’ai vu des choses que j’ai imaginées” (I saw things I imagined) [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the preview of Rachel Marsil’s (@rachel.marsil) first solo exhibition in Nigeria\, on 7 March from 4pm. \nOpening during @lagosgalleryweekend \, and the second presentation within FF Projects’ year-long residency at Alára Lagos\, the exhibition brings together works made over an 18-month period (2024–2025)\, during which the artist turned her focus toward the interior lives of her ever-present female figures. \nThis series also reflects the artist’s own journey into Africa\, and how what began as an observational and curious practice\, evolved into a welcoming community that she was decidedly part of. As such\, these works allow a glimpse into what happens when you cross the boundary of diasporic imagination into local reality.\n•\n📅Opening 7 March (16.00-18.00). On view until 6 April at Alára \n🏛️As part of a year-long @_ff_projects residency at @alaralagos \nDetails by @nothingtodoinlagos. \n*** \nDisclaimer: Unless explicitly stated\, ArtGuideAfrica does not own\, endorse and is not affiliated with any event/organisation included on this event calendar. SUMMARY:Efuru and The Woman of The Lake [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from Flora Nwapa’s 1966 novel\, Efuru\, this exhibition takes its name and spirit from a woman who exists beyond the narrow definitions of fulfilment imposed upon her. Efuru is beautiful\, capable\, generous\, and deeply rooted in her community. Though her marriages fail and she is at times misunderstood or even vilified\, she is ultimately chosen by the Woman of the Lake\, a goddess of wealth\, beauty\, depth\, and abundance. Through this devotion\, Efuru finds renewal\, meaning\, and vindication. Her worth is not diminished by rejection; it is affirmed through alignment with her true self and with a feminine power that exists beyond societal approval.\n\n\n\nAt its heart\, Efuru and the Woman of the Lake is an ode to the strength of women; in communion with themselves and with one another. One of the book’s most resonant threads is its attention to everyday womanhood: women seen not only in moments of crisis or transcendence\, but in the quiet intimacy of daily life\, labour\, conversation\, care\, and companionship. While Efuru anchors the narrative\, it is through her relationships with other women: mothers\, traders\, friends\, and elders\, that we are invited into the social and emotional landscape of her world. This exhibition echoes that thread\, with many of the works depicting women and girls simply living\, working\, gathering\, and being. SUMMARY:Ilé Àdúà; The Sacred Codes [Exhibition]
DESCRIPTION:Nomadic Art Gallery presents Ilé Àdúà; The Sacred Codes\, a duo exhibition by Faith Omole (@faithomole_m) and Paul Ayihawu (@ayihawu02)\, running from 06 – 28 March\, 2026. \nThis exhibition reimagines prayer as a universal human practice\, not just a singular religious act\, but a spectrum of intentional actions through which people seek alignment\, clarity\, and transformation. Expanding beyond devotion\, prayer unfolds here through meditation\, manifestation\, silence\, visualization\, and embodied attention\, becoming a technology of presence that shapes both inner and outer realities. \nRooted in the living metaphysical language of Nsịbịdị\, the exhibition transforms visual codes into a connective system that translates invisible states of consciousness into form\, positioning art itself as an active form of prayer. \nThrough Faith Omole’s focus on prayer as action and Paul Ayihawu’s exploration of prayer as inner state\, the exhibition creates an immersive space where ritual\, stillness\, intention\, and awareness converge. \n📅 Opening Reception: 3:00 PM\, Friday\, March 6\, 2026\n📍 Venue: Nomadic Art Gallery\, 22 Adetokunbo Ademola Street\, Victoria Island\, Lagos\n🗓️ On view through: March 28\, 2026 [Gallery is closed on Sundays] \nEvent Details by @nomadic.ag. \n*** \nDisclaimer: Unless explicitly stated\, ArtGuideAfrica does not own\, endorse and is not affiliated with any event/organisation included on this event calendar. SUMMARY:Inclusivity: Widening the Frame [+234 Art Fair 2026]
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 edition of +234 Art Fair is guided by the theme Inclusivity— a commitment to seeing more\, not just showing more. Inclusivity is not about adding new doors\, but about removing the walls that quietly shape who gets seen. Every art scene is shaped by choices that reflect access and privilege just as much as talent. This year\, the fair widens the frame\, moving beyond familiar narratives to embrace the breadth of creative expression across Nigeria. Through collaborations with universities\, art schools\, NGOs\, and cultural custodians\, +234 Art Fair brings overlooked voices into focus. We have been across the nation searching for promising new artists and this year\, we are bringing the unseen into view. \n*REGISTRATION REQUIRED* \nDetails by @plus234art. \n*** \nDisclaimer: Unless explicitly stated\, ArtGuideAfrica does not own\, endorse and is not affiliated with any event/organisation included on this event calendar.
