Open Call: G.A.S. Critical Writing Workshop

We’re excited to announce the call for the pilot edition of the G.A.S. Critical Writing Workshop, an initiative supporting the professional and critical development of emerging art writers, researchers, and cultural practitioners based in Lagos, Nigeria.
Led by current resident Olutomi Kassim (@searchforisinmi), this three-day intensive at G.A.S. Lagos will bring together six early-career/emerging participants for a focused programme centred on developing practical writing skills and critical approaches to engaging with art.
This edition will explore critical art writing practices while examining how writing can function as a tool for activism, encouraging readers to ask questions, challenge dominant narratives, and engage more deeply with the social and political contexts that shape contemporary art.
✅ Develop a clear argument, title, and short critical text
✅ Situate your writing within key cultural and scholarly debates
✅ Learn research methods grounded in Nigerian epistemologies (incl. Chinweizu Ibekwe & Wole Soyinka)
✅ Take part in guided writing exercises, discussions & peer feedback
✅ Produce a 1,000-word draft or structured article outline
✅ Opportunity for publication in Business Today, Nigeria
The G.A.S. Critical Writing Workshop falls under the wider scope of Project Nexus, an ambitious residency and education programme designed to nurture and empower artists, art educators, art historians, and curators through a series of residencies, professional development workshops, and educational initiatives over three years.
